Project Overview and Key Design Considerations

SMS group, a German-headquartered global leader in metallurgical plant construction and mechanical engineering, has established a world-class manufacturing hub in Sanand to serve as a pivotal base for the Indian and Southeast Asian markets. This 80,000 sq. mt. facility is designed to manufacture high-end equipment for steelworks, including components for continuous casting, furnaces, and strip processing lines.

The architectural and structural design was meticulously engineered to handle the “heavy-duty” nature of metallurgical manufacturing. The facility features massive clear heights and heavy-load bearing floors to accommodate large-scale assembly and the movement of gargantuan steel components.

A key highlight is the integration of high-capacity overhead cranes (up to 100 tons) and specialized pits for precision machining and assembly of heavy components.

VMS Scope and Project Outcomes

VMS Consultants served as the Design Consultants for this project, delivering a multidisciplinary engineering package that included Architectural, Structural, and MEP design. Our structural team faced the complex task of designing reinforced foundations capable of withstanding the immense static and dynamic loads generated by heavy machining centers and metallurgical assembly.

Our MEP designers focused on creating a high-reliability utility network, including heavy-duty compressed air systems, specialized industrial cooling, and a robust electrical grid designed for 24/7 industrial operations. The facility also incorporates sustainable design elements, such as optimized natural lighting and ventilation for the massive shop floors.
