Design included structural steel work (9,000 Ton), Crusher house, Transfer Towers (63 m high), Loco Shed, approx. 2,000 m long Conveyor galleries, Trestles, etc. The project was done in collaboration with Energo Engineering Projects. DCPL and Adani Power acted as approval agencies. The Project was completed within a tight deadline of 4 months, finishing design, obtaining approvals and delivering drawings. Economy in design enabled reduction in cost. Chinese Standard steel sections were used as required.

Design of Civil Works with 2 Wagon tipplers, Stacker - reclaimer, Underground tunnels, Crusher house, U.G. Transfer towers, Trestle foundations, MCC Rooms, DE/DS system, etc. Approving agency for the project was NTPC. The Project was awarded to turnkey supplier ThyssenKrupp. The design successfully overcame several difficult site conditions. The site had water logged soil, poor load bearing capacity and was located within an existing Thermal Power station amongst other constraints. Various technically complex solutions were devised and implemented.

Transfer towers, Trestle foundations, MCC Rooms, DE/DS system, Roads, Storm drains, etc. Approving agency for the project was NTPC. The Project was award to EPC contractor JMC Projects. The Project was awarded to JMC through competitive bidding based on bid stage design by VMS. Many ideas from the bid stage design were implemented in the final design. This helped with cost control. Enabling structures for construction were also designed by VMS.

The Project was award to EPC contractor JMC Projects. The Project was won at a competitive price on the basis of the bid stage design done by VMS. Actual quantities remained well within the quantities forecasted at Bid stage. This greatly reduced riks of cost overrun for the EPC contractor.

Components included inlet/screen/grit structure, 51.5m dia clariflocculators, a filter house, a chemical house, treated water sump, dirty water sump, back wash tank and admin building. VMS was engaged by Enviro Control Associates. Locally available stones were used in designing the storage and polishing pond, saving costs of RCC works.

Water Treatment Plant (200 MLD)

Components of the project include inlet/screen/grit structure, 10 numbers of la mella clarifiers with 13m x 13m dimension, filter house, chemical house, treated water sump, dirty water sump, back wash tank, etc. The project was commissioned by Enviro Control Associates. The groundwater table of the site is high, creating potential problems for the filter house which is usually partly underground. To solve this, the filter house is designed on columns above ground. This saves critical time and costs associated with continuous dewatering, working in wet soil and waterproofing.
Water supply Project

Design of the three intake wells with approach bridges, at the Dam Reservoir. Additionally, Headwork sites with a Pump house & UG sumps (2750 m3 & 1250 m3capacity) at each site, Staff quarters, Roads, Storm drains & Sewage Collection, Thrust blocks & Valve chambers for 900 mm. dia. pipe line, etc were designed. The EPC project was commissioned by L&T. Rocky strata, very hilly terrain & space constraint were limitations at each Headwork. Careful planning of site layouts & appropriately locating various units tackled the issue. VMS's experience in such projects helped minimise unnecessary rock excavation.
Water Supply Project

To supply water to arid regions of saurasthra and kutch through the Narmada Canal network, the Government of Gujarat floated large EPC/turnkey packages. Components include large pump-houses (1,500 m2), storage reservoirs (12,500 m3) and water mains (2,000 mm). VMS was engaged by GWIL as well as by EPC/turnkey contractors like L&T, IVRCL, Essar, etc. For GWIL, best practices in design and construction to provide consistency across the board were formulated. Representing the EPC/turnkey contractors, VMS designed for optimization. A special feature of the design, amongst many others is, Vertical turbine Pumps supported over structural slabs. The frequency of the Pump house structure was checked to avoid resonance with the operating frequency of the Pumps.

Engaged by EPC ThyssenKrupp, VMS worked on the Mill foundation, mill building, conveyor, air slider structure mainly designed using Steel and RCC. British sections are used in the design due to availability of materials locally. A dynamic analysis of mill foundations was done for the design.
Clinker Grinding Unit (35 TPH)
Foundation design for a cement mill building, two 2,000 MT cement silos, a packing plant, dump hopper, etc. VMS was engaged by EPC ThyssenKrupp. Material take off for reinforcement was given quite early for procurement. The detailed design was done to avoid any deviation in reinforcement bar dia to avoid mismatch with the procurement mandate.
Captive Power Plant (CPP) 2 x 25 MW

VMS was engaged to design the Boiler foundation, ESP foundation, ACC foundation, TG building, 25 MW TG deck foundation, transformer foundation, MCC buildings, etc by ThyssenKrupp. The Design takes into account the running operations in the existing cement plant. Optimisation was done at all stages.
Waste Heat Recover Power Plant
Design for largest waste heat recovery Plant in the world. A total of 3,300 Ton Steel and 7,000 m3 concrete were used to construct this mammoth project. Components included five Boiler Houses, a TG Building, 35 MW TG Deck, TG Deck Foundation, DM WareHouse, etc. The approving agency was Ercom. VMS was engaged by ThyssenKrupp. The project was completed in a record six months including the civil & steel structure design, approval and fabrication drawings. Designing for extremely congested spaces in the existing cement plant were uniquely challenging. Numerous underground utilities blocked the footprint of proposed underground structures. This issue was tackled by a unique solution for the sub structure design. Design adheres to the Eurocode standards. British standard steel sections were used for the project.
Reliance PetroleumJamnagar, Gujarat
EPC contract was awarded to Bechtel Corporation. As part of its cost optimisation drive for this project, Reliance engaged VMS to carry out value engineering of the massive volume concrete works. The intelligent design significantly reduced concrete quantities, without compromising design criteria and safety aspects. The construction time was reduced by half, saving huge resources, by converting 20m high multi-layered pipe racks from concrete to steel midway into construction. Extensive field engineering was carried out to provide rapid solutions to critical problems. For example, a number of culverts were designed to support a multi axle trailer carrying huge equipment with a 1,000 Ton load.
Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd.Ahmedabad, Gujarat
The Sabarmati Riverfront Project was initiated by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to develop the 11 km bank on each side of the river. VMS was commissioned for technological evaluation & Value Engineering study for this massive urban infrastructure project. A number of technologies were explored, evaluating parameters such as construction time, cost , constructability, durability, etc. A pilot project, 500m in length was executed to test the stone gabion technology. Eventually, an anchored diaphragm wall was selected as the foundation system. The R.C.C. retaining wall was used as the counterfort and cantilever. The project also involved several million cubic meter of landfill on both sides of the river. The intense analysis, feeding on VMS’s years of experience ended up saving millions of Rupees for the city.
